Welcome to PYRSOGIANNI The village of the stone craftsmen
There is
an old saying in the region of Epirus in Greece:
"God
first created the village of Pyrsogianni, and the men of Pyrsogianni built
the world! "
Perched high up in a remote
area in one of the many branches of the Pindos mountain a group of villages
are famous for their menfolk who were gifted stonemasons. They are called
MASTOROHORIA
(Mastoras = craftsman, Horia= villages) and the most famous of these is
the village of Pyrsogianni
(Pir-soo-yianne), one of many montainous villages in Epirus, has survived
unchanged for hundreds of years. In its hayday Pyrsogianni
numbered more than a thousand inhabitands living a traditional but
harsh lifestyle.
But the remote village
of Pyrsogianni was famous throughout the centuries for its gifted stonemasons.
They were men who could make the stone to "sing". The could take a rough
stone and convert it to Venetian
lace (see the fireplace facade below).
I welcome you to this
page that provides information for Pyrsogianni, the most famous of
the "mastorohoria" , in Greece and in the Balkans.
